Your Healthy Holiday Habits Game Plan
Posted on November 7, 2019 in REV Wellness
It’s easier to have a strong wellness game in the warmer months – smoothies, outdoor runs and tons of water – amiright? But with the colder months, comes shorter days and naturally, a dip in our wellness routines. Between the halloween candy, friendsgiving, pumpkin everything, holidays with the fam, sips of wine and champagne…over indulgence becomes the new norm.
By the time January 1st rolls around, we are feeling exhausted, run down, guilty for falling off the health wagon and in need of a total detox / reset. Sound familiar?
While we don’t suggest you hide out and stay away from any festive fun, it is important for you to go into the holiday season with a game plan. So read on to side step your typical unhealthy holiday patterns and enjoy the most wonderful time of the year with these actionable tips!
Yes, we’ve all heard it before – drink lots of water. But do you actually do it? A tried and true way to stay hydrated is to fall asleep with a glass of water right next to your bed. As soon as your alarm goes off, try to drink as much of the glass of water as possible. Cold water throughout a cold day is never fun. Try drinking hot water with lemon or an herbal tea. Have a holiday party to go to? Grab a glass of water while you order your prosecco. For every one adult beverage, drink one glass of water. Trust us – you don’t want to be that person at the party who over indulged a little too much anyway!
Time and time again, we are told that sleep is important. Instead of binge watching Modern Love or scrolling through Instagram, take this time to read one of those books your friends won’t stop talking about. Unwinding at the end of the day and getting away from that blue light will do you good. Not yet sold? Turning the lights off earlier will allow you to get up in the morning with less hits on that snooze button! So get to bed early and sign up for an early morning sweat sesh at REV!
Think about this one long and hard…have you ever carved out time in your day for a good sweat and then regretted it? No, obviously not. Then why do we find it so hard to do? Maybe you had one too many spiked ciders the night before, or you stayed up too late with family and friends. Sound familiar? Setting your alarm, finding an accountability buddy, blocking off time on your calendar, these are all ways to ensure you make time for a sweat. Still missed your workout? Don’t beat yourself up. Instead, walk as much as possible throughout the day. Take the stairs, walk around the block an extra time, park your car further away from your destination, just get moving.
It’s not easy limiting sweets during the holidays – we get it. But you can set yourself up for success in a few ways. First, don’t buy or make the sweet stuff yourself. The saying, out of sight, out of mind is REAL! If it’s not at home, you can’t eat it! Second, get rid of the all or nothing mindset. It’s not practical. If you’re at work or out at a holiday party, just practice mindful eating. Focus on being aware of your choices. Craving one of those gingerbread cookies or dying to try that eggnog? Go for it, but limit yourself to one.
The holidays are so much fun, but they can also leave us feeling completely drained. With so much going on, don’t beat yourself up if you have one or two bad days. Each day is a new day and you owe it to yourself to take care of #1 (you!) We guarantee you’ll be happy you did!
